How to Choose an AI Development Company: A 10-Point Checklist
Ten practical questions to ask before you hire an AI development partner, from production experience and data security to pricing, ownership and support after launch.
Almost every software company now says it does AI. For a buyer, that makes choosing a partner harder, not easier. A polished demo is easy to build; an AI system that works reliably on your data, inside your processes, at a cost you can sustain, is not. These ten questions will help you tell the difference.
1. Have they put AI into production, not just into demos?
Ask for examples of AI systems that real users rely on today, and what happened after launch. Teams with production experience talk about monitoring, failure cases, retraining and running costs. Teams without it talk mainly about models and accuracy in a lab.
2. Do they start with your business problem?
A good partner asks what decision or task you want to improve, how it is done today and what a better result is worth, before recommending any technology. Be cautious if the conversation starts with a favourite tool or model, or if they never suggest that AI might not be the right answer.
3. How will they test whether it works?
Ask how success will be measured and on what data. A strong partner proposes a short proof of value on your real data, with a success criterion agreed in advance, before you commit to a full build. That protects your budget if the idea does not hold up.
4. How do they handle your data?
Find out where your data will be stored and processed, whether any AI provider can use it for training, who on their team can access it and how it is deleted at the end. For personal data in India, ask how they address the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.
5. Can they integrate with your systems?
AI creates value when it fits into the tools people already use: your ERP, CRM, document system or website. Ask about their experience with integration, APIs and identity systems, not only with models. Most of the effort in a real AI project is here.
6. How do they deal with mistakes and bias?
Every AI system makes mistakes. Ask how they detect them, when a human reviews the output, and how they test for unfair results across groups of users. For decisions about people, such as hiring or lending, this matters as much as accuracy.
7. What will it cost to run, not just to build?
Generative AI in particular has ongoing usage costs that grow with adoption. Ask for an estimate of monthly running costs at your expected volume, and what they do to keep them down, such as caching, smaller models or limits.
8. Who owns the result?
Confirm that you will own the source code, prompts, configurations and any models trained on your data, and that you can move them to another provider. Avoid arrangements where your solution only works inside the vendor's proprietary platform.
9. What happens after launch?
Data, users and AI models change. Ask what support, monitoring and improvement they offer after go-live, and how quickly they respond if quality drops. A partner who disappears at handover leaves you with a system nobody can maintain.
10. Do they speak your users' language?
If your customers or staff work in Hindi, Marathi or other Indian languages, check that the partner has built and tested AI in those languages. Many models perform noticeably worse outside English, and the gap only shows with real users.
A simple way to compare partners
Score each shortlisted company from 1 to 5 on the ten questions above, weight the ones that matter most to you, and ask each to propose a small, paid proof of value. How they run that first step is the best predictor of how they will run the rest.
How AdharAI approaches AI projects
We build and run AI in our own products: ProInt screens and interviews job candidates, and AdharAI EduTech explains answers and analyses student performance in English, Hindi and Marathi. Every client project starts with the business problem and a proof of value on real data. If you would like to talk through your use case, schedule a consultation or read more about our AI and machine learning services.
